Re: 4800 - Swapping the Black cartridges

2005-08-20 by Steve Gledhill

Here's an update on the Black ink swap post of a week or so ago.
Original post inclded below for easy reference ...

I've now done the following:

1.	Swapped out the 4 one third full Light Inks for 4 full new Light
Ink carts.
2.	Started the `replace black' routine.
3.	The printer then told me the C, M & Y carts didn't have enough ink
in them so to swap them (exactly as per the 4 Light inks) – they
actually had about the same as the Light inks i.e. about 1/3 full. So
I swapped those 3 for 3 new carts.
4.	I then proceeded to complete the black cart swap exactly as per the
documented process.

During this swap I used a total of 91.3 ml of ink – which is very
close to what I used at a previous swap (88.3ml) but when the carts
were full enough for the swap.

So what have I learnt?

1.	To swap black inks (in this case replacing MK with PK) ALL of the
other carts must be at least 1/3 full.
2.	If they're not that full then you need to replace the `less then
1/3 full' carts before you can swap the black inks.

I have been informed (thanks to someone on the list) that I can still
use the `less then 1/3 full' carts by swapping them back in – so
apparently no actual additional ink wastage.

So what do I think?

1.	Expletive deleted.
2.	At least there's no additional ink wastage above a swap where you
don't need to replace part full carts.
