Just wondering if maybe the firmware is letting it leak a little because of the non Epson chip. What it sounds like is that the ink is being discharged when the head is oscilating to prevent the ink from drying in the jet. There is a description of this somewhere on the Epson website in a well hidden PDF about their inkjet technology. Normally if the ink builds into a drop, you get a very large spot on your print. A drop is a drop and they all have about the same size as determined by things like surface tension, safe to say a real drop is very large after it hits the paper. I've never seen one as small as you describe which really lends to the possibility that it is being semi-sprayed.
