In my 1280 with spongless carts, I just run them down to where the SSC utility keeps me from printing. The carts seem to still be 20%-30% full, so I just fill them back up. It seems the spongeless carts just hold a lot more ink than the SSC utility thinks they do. Remember that utility doesn't actually measure the cart. It just keeps track of how much you've printed and computes when it think the carts are getting low. And with a healthy safety margin to keep from damaging the printer and to sell more ink.
