Re: [Digital BW] Warning - Spongeless carts and the SSC utility

2005-09-02 by steve marino

Richard,
I'm not sure whay a ssc utility is, but I do have a fair amount of experience with MIS inks, especially the Eboni Black. Mainly I print from a 2200. but I recently bought an 1160. Before I did anything else I would fill up a cartridge with Epson Archival Base from MIS (cleaning fluid) and do THREE cleaning cycles with it. Then, I would let the printer sit overnite, then do THREE more cleaning cycles, pop in a new cartridge of Eboni Black and do a nozzle ck. Myself, I got real tired of RIPS and profiles and all manner of complications and print only B.O. now with Eboni Black on enhanced matt or velvet fine art papers. It doesn't work for every image, and the 1160 prints aren't as good as the 2200 because of the dpi being limited to 1440, but when it works it looks great. I am not sure if you can print the velvet fine art thru the 1160 though. I do a nozzle ck every 2 days to make sure all is well. The 1160 is prone to clogs anyway. I am still researching older HP printers, but I
am convinced that is the way to go for black and white printing. The 7960 is the best black and white printer you can get, and cheap, but the 8x10 prints won't cut it for me. I may go for a HP 9650 or an older 1220c as these can be picked up on E-Bay for a song. Hope this helps. Steve.

Hi Folks,

I don't know if it's just me being very unlucky with a bad batch of
MIS spongeless carts for my 1160 but don't use the SSC utility to do
the cleaning. I recently changed from a CIS with the MIS FS inks to
the UT1 to try my hand at printing more neutral when I foolishly
clicked on the SSC's cleaning and it ended up sucking ALL of the ink
out of ALL the carts. Just a warning.

Does anybody have an idea why I wouldn't get a clog (ever) using the
CIS but now with the spongeless carts I can't get all of the black
(Eboni) jets to fire. I've managed two 5x7 prints in the past 2 weeks
and used up about half of my 4 oz bottles of ink. Maybe the FS tone
wasn't so bad after all.

Thanks,

Richard (another one)
