Julian, don't underestimate learning curves and bang for the buck! Both Mac and new Generation PC's are very powerful and at very attractive prices. People prefer what they are used to. A switch to Win 2000 or XP based machine would be nothing compared to switching to a Mac System for the first time. Many of my relatives use Mac machines but they drive me nuts!(macs) I'm constantly saying to myself why do they do it this way and I'm sure the Mac people say the same thing about PC's. Most people support what they know. I Just upgraded to a New PC and yes I did look at the G4 Mac's My 1200.00 dollars got me a 1800Xp Athlon system with a gig of ram ect, ect. The 1800xp Athlon is equal to or faster than a 2 Gigahertz Pent IV in most of the photoshop functions I use. This power is in the Ball park10-12% with a 733mhz? G4 single processor. Check the price on those! About 3000$ You say you print with the Piezo driver, these are grey scale files much smaller than RGB files you might want that G5 or dual processor Mac for. Why not save some money and put it towards something else. A 7000? piezo pro 2? High end scanner? 21in monitor? My Grey scales files are about 120 mb from 4X5 negs. This Athlon system has photoshop cutting threw them like butter. Well almost :) I probably will dump the XP os and Load Win 2k. Its too early for a verdict on XP and I'am irratated at having to find xp drivers. I'm very happy with the Photoshop power I'am getting for 1200.00 If you use strange special effects filters in PS or multi layered files , Then I would look at little harder at the Mac....
