OK sorry folks this is obviously a hornets nest or at least a bore since it has been rehashed several times over. In my defence i did do a search but didnt come up with the August thread. Anyway it seems that different strokes for different folks and it's not clear cut. I have learned though that spline (Powerzoom) and lanczos (Irfanview or Qimage) seem to be the more modern and more acceptable solutions than GF or Bicubic, or SI pro 2. However it also seems that different programs are best for different images - depending on the nature of the image - but it isnt clear how one can discern beforehand which to use, and itd be a drag to have to use all 4 or 5 program/plugin options to see which is best on each individual image.
