RE: 1160 cleaning

2001-12-28 by Barry Kelsall

There are many sources for info in the 1160. One is the Epson-Inkjet mailing
list resource page (with thanks to Alan Womack):

Then there is the Piezography BW Clogging page:

Generally I find that if you keep the printer itself clean from accumulating
dust & debris, and avoid cheap paper, esp. plain papers that could shed a
lot of fiber, you shouldn't have much trouble that a couple cleaning cycles
couldn't handle.

Banding can be caused by a clogged nozzle but is more often caused by a
deflected nozzle. Upon inspecting a (seemingly good) nozzle check, if you
see a fuzzy line, or a line that seems out of placement, or a line with
scattered dots, you will probably see banding. There might be a hair stuck
under the print head, or just a little crud.

My favorite method is the one where you hold the Paper Feed button until the
head advances to the Change Carts position; unplug the printer; take half a
paper towel, fold or roll it until it fits in the metal galley under the
heads (between the feed rollers & the pizza wheels); tape the ends of the
towel down & use a syringe to put a few drops of Windex on the middle of the
towel; then push the head back & forth over the towel. Usually it takes 3 or
4 times before you start to see individual colors on the towel. Before
plugging the printer back in, push the head all the way to the right. I
always run a purge page after this process before doing a nozzle check. If
your head is very dirty, this method might actually cause clogging by
pushing the dirt around, but (so far) it has not been a problem for me to
cure doing a purge & nozzle cleaning cycle or two.

The Windex trick found at the Piezography link above works well for stubborn
clogs.

Frank, you will need to be careful if your printer had Lyson ink in it. You
will need to flush the head before changing to MIS. You may want to flush
the head regardless, since you don't know the ink history of your 1160. MIS
sells the flushing carts.

Good luck,
-BK
