RE: [Digital BW] Epson 2400 - Some General thoughts please

2005-11-17 by John Moody

For BW only, the 2400 is very nice; as-is, or driven by a RIP like QTR or
IJC if you want more printer control.

For color, if the 2400 were supported by good RIPs like StudioPrint or
Evolution, I would be happy with the 2400. It’s not, and likely never will
be, so that means stepping up to the 4800 to get the best available
linearization, and color RIP support, or living with the Epson driver. If
you only use Epson paper, that would be just fine, but if you want to
explore the many other papers, the driver is lacking in precise ink controls
that will not allow you to get the best result from the paper and ink.
For how often I would want to switch the MK/PK ink, and my low volume use,
prints on the 4800 would cost me a fortune, so I’m currently at an impasse.
It will probably take Epson another 18 months minimum before we see new
machines that _might_ address the MK/PK ink issue.

The 2400 is a very nice machine, but you did ask “happy as can be”, so those
are my wishes, not really criticisms. I’m hoping someone reverse engineers
the ColorBase database, which would potentially solve the ink control issue
on _some_ papers. Then I would get a 2400 for sure.

Best regards,
John Moody

Subject: [Digital BW] Epson 2400 - Some General thoughts please

I have always enjoyed this post and get on it now and then to solve a
problem.....thank you all for you help in the past. I now am tired
though. I have the 1280, with MIS inks, the C86 with the EZ inks.
Sometimes great results sometimes I go nuts, particularly with Color
on the 1280. I am not a professional but an advanced amateur I
suspect. I am thinking of just going with the Epson 2400 with Epson
inks and just tweak the system to my liking and leave it at that. My
question to the group is ......In general, is everyone as happy as one
can be with the Epson 2400 for both color and black and white? Thanks

Joe
