You might want to try out QTR by Roy Harrington. If you really want to milk the shadows to their utmost, then you can use the Create ICC part of the program and get just what you are looking for. It does require a densitometer and some study time and some experimentation, but the results are well worth the effort and the low price of $50 after you decide you really need it.
