If the transitions are way off, check that the ink is correct.  I have test
files for UT2 and UT7 at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/Test-files.htm

If you can achieve the tones you want by printing from a grayscale file and
using the Epson driver sliders, then inserting an ICC into the workflow in
Print with Preview allows you to linearize your system and cure all but the
worst of these problems.
