The best way to solve the problems of B&W printing are to buy an Epson 2400 or a cheaper Epson and a dedicated B&W inkset. B&W print with a pure color inkset is next to hopeless in my experience. The B&W approaches I've worked with recently are listed at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/index.htm. They are all MIS ink and Epson printer based.
