Ed Hamrick (Vuescan) seems to know how to drive a scanner, and his interface has gotten better with each version that he's worked on it. I've used that for my flatbeds and film scanner, and prefer the package shipped with the Artixscan over Vuescan or Silverfast for most of what I do. Silverfast I tried with the Artixscan, but found no advantage to it. With B&W on the Epson flatbed, I use Vuescan.
