Ed Hamrick (Vuescan) seems to know how to drive a scanner, and his 
interface has gotten better with each version that he's worked on it. 
I've used that for my flatbeds and film scanner, and prefer the 
package shipped with the Artixscan over Vuescan or Silverfast for 
most of what I do. Silverfast I tried with the Artixscan, but found 
no advantage to it. With B&W on the Epson flatbed, I use Vuescan.
