Yes it is more expensive.  The list of reasons as to why it's worth it over
the 1280 is likely quite long but to highlight a couple of key reasons:

1.  The B&W out of the box with Epson Adv B&W is really very good and likely
to satisfy 90% of people.
2.  It's ease of use is simply sublime.
3.  It's colour output is superb also.  So B&W and colour, easily done with
the same ink set.
4.  It will undoubtedly, mechanically and driver-wise, serve as a better
platform for moving beyond the OEM solution should you desire more.

Only you can assess the economics of your own situation but I'd think
carefully as to whether another older printer was being penny wise and pound
foolish.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
