I do not have experience, but i did just read a glossary of inkjet terms, and I think what you describe is called feathering or wicking - where the ink travels into the paper (substrate) in patterns. It may (only my inexperienced opinion) be caused by an unsuitable (to the ink you're using) paper coating ?
