In the FAQ page there is a description of the technique I use.  I've
found it to be a good middle ground between the simplest and most
complex of the techniques.  It gives IMO the "most bang for the buck"
in control vs complexity.

It depends on how you want to work.  I convert to grayscale mode after
the color-to-BW conversion (whichever technique is used) because it
reduces file size by 2/3.  I have not found any advantage in the end
result to keeping the file in RGB mode.

One of the articles (#9) outlines a simple workflow for the 2400.  It
does not require any icc profiles or curves, and is a great way to get
started.  It is a detailed step-by-step outline with explanations that
should answer most of your questions.
