I think the transfer function has value because of its easy of use. For example, I think it can make easy-to-use paper profiles if the papers don't need too much adjustment. However, I've found the transfer function to be a rather crude control device compared to the Photoshop Image Adjustment Curves. With the transfer function, you never quite know what a change in one area is going to do to the output in another area. So, make just minor changes with it, and be sure to use the 21-step test strip to keep track of what the tool is doing to the output. Paul http://www.PaulRoark.com
