Re: [Digital BW] Which Printer - Thanks For Input

Helen, BO = Black Only. BTW, K is the abbreviation
for Black as B stands for Blue. So KO should be the
abbreviation for Black Only - but that one was already
taken by another (usually) more brutal sport! Hang
around on this list for a while and you will
occasionally be witness to some (over)heated debates!
We seem to hold this subject dear - but often from
quite different perspectives. Don't let that put you
off - hang in there, ask questions you need the
answers to, and you will be rewarded. In time you will
be able to help another beginner.

RIP is Raster Image Processor and these are special
programs for, in essence, (although I'm sure I'll get
corrected here) replacing or augmenting the print
driver (the software that is the interface between the
computer and the print engine) from the manufacturer
of the printer. These "tell" the printer which ink,
how (e.g. dither pattern, etc), and how much ink to put
where. Most are quite expensive and do color and B&W,
but there is one notable exception: QTR (Quad Tone
RIP) from Roy Harrington that is a B&W (only) RIP
available as shareware for $50. Many on this list use
it and it is now what Jon Cone uses for the Neutral K7
inksets.

You can "Google": QTR, MIS, Clayton Jones, and Paul
Roark to get to some VERY useful sites. Paul Roark
and Clayton Jones are particularly well organized and
easy to understand for beginners. I couldn't recommend
their sites more highly. When you return to this list
it will all start to make sense...
