So there is an obvious math relationship between a size 40 dot grouping at 720 dpi, and a size 20 dot grouping at 1440 dpi. I imagine physical oddities and realities of ink on paper though, so they may or may not result in the same actual density and explain why different dot size printers give different dmax, given various ink/media characteristics.
