This could be done today with today's construction if Epson chose to allow
it.  Only the K channel is pumped out.  The issue is that the ink change
takes the "opportunity" to do a power clean at the same time.

Or that they're paying for a larger head and mechanical elements they never
use.

What we really need is a better K ink, one capable of performing well on
both glossy and matte media...
