In NY you can get a tax ID online, but unless you do enough business to 
justify the extra paper work, you might just want to buy retail. I 
believe you can also get a Federal tax ID online now.

Quarterly sales tax payments, plus the long form for your taxes with 
profit/loss statement, self employment tax statement, etc. That may not 
apply to all states.
