I recently sent in a set of prints to Focus magazine. This month, however there was no submission fee. Spivak advertised that he was looking to publish portfolios for his FOCUS magazine. I got a call from him 2 days later, telling me he wanted to publish the work, but there would be a $1500. Advertising charge. I told him that I wasn't interested in buying advertising, that I was just responding to his call for portfolios. He said , "okay, we publish 2 portfolios each issue where people don't buy advertising" he would let me know if I was to be published. A few days later, he called again asking if I was interested in the $1500.00 deal. I once again told him NO. I wasn't interested in advertising with him. He asked me how I get the public to find out about me. I told him that I have a website, that I regularly send out promo cards, I have a New York rep., my stock photos are distributed through Nonstock / Picturearts, and I have a relationship with Corbis. He said to me "Then you do advertise with your promo cards..isn't that the same as advertising with me?" Once again I told him that I wasn't interested, and hung up the phone. Thankfully, I just sent small unmounted prints a EEM, no great loss of expense. I did include a self address stamped envelope for their return, just a couple of dollars invested..no great loss. I think this guy is a hustler..watch out. I hope you get your money and work back. David Aschkenas www.daschkenasphoto.com -- David Aschkenas 915 N.
