Martin,
I am sorry - I didn't mean to start a flame. This forum has been a
life saver to me from the beginning of my life in digital printing.
The ad in Focus magazine was so misleading and the owner so volatile,
that beside being terribly upset at not having my portfolio returned
and his being unreachable, I wanted to warn others and reveal what
appeared to be a scam. ( I was also very pissed off ). You might be
interested in knowing that last night after I left two voice mail
messages, it didn't take Spivak more than a few minutes to return my
call, screaming like a banshee - then calling again within the hour
to threaten me. Today he sent me an email titled "list of offences",
naming my misdeeds and ordering me to retract my statements publicly -
after I receive my portfolio which he is sending UPS ground. If I
follow his "orders" he won't sue because he and his lawyer are "too
busy."
I must say that the Dec 2005 issue of Focus, which I picked up at
Borders looked very good, and the name of Stephen Perloff on the
cover as writer of a lead article gave the publication a Good
Housekeeping Seal of Approval as well as a Kosher stamp for me.
I was shocked that between the December issue and my January response
to the juried exhibition, the rules had changed - and he harrassed me
by phone to buy $1500 worth of advertising. I never heard of a juried
competition to pay to advertise.
I've been a full time professional artist for over half a century -
and have never run into anything quite this blatant. Most of my life
has been as a sculptor, and it's been decades since I've sent to
juries. My identity is still as a sculptor. Photography has been my
primary medium and passion for the last few years, and I feel
confident about my work. I thought it would be nice to be featured in
a photography magazine.
Again, my apologies if I started something that escalated beyond the
rules of the forum.
Sincerely,
Arlene Love
