Printing black only has the advantage of offering the same tone throughout... 
at least until paper white kicks in. But you already admitted it doesn't 
offer the quality you need. There is no simple equivalent to this using multiple 
inks, as the balance needs to change for each paper, both for paper tone, and 
for ink densities. So if Black Only won't do it for you, then a more complex 
solution is required.
