On my Epson R200 you can set the platen gap wider for thicker papers.  This
is done in the Epson print utillity and I would imagine that you can do the
same with the Epson R220.
 
I've only had to use this once when printing on thick card but for normal
photo papers I've not had to do it, but it may be that your printer head is
sitting a little closer than mine.

Something is quite wrong if the print head is touching the media.  You might
investigate why that is happening.  It would seem that correcting that
problem would provide you with more benefit than fixing the symptom.
