Re: [Digital BW] Entering the world of digital

2006-07-17 by Brian Ellis

"I currently use a pentax 67 with slow
b&w film for my serious landscape work and then I scan the negs. I
plan on continuing to do that and using the rebel xt as a backup or
when logistics don't make carrying the beast 67 with me."

I used the Pentax 67 system for many years, along with 4x5 and 8x10 systems.
I still use 4x5 and I still have the Pentax system, I just don't use it
since I got the Canon 5D. I don't know about the Canon Rebel but I can tell
you that the 5D with Canon L lenses compares very favorably with the Pentax
67 as long as the print size is roughly 11x14 or smaller. It may
compare favorably with bigger enlargements but my printer stops at 13" wide
so I have no experience with much bigger enlargements.

So if you possibly can afford it, I'd buy the 5D rather than the Rebel. With
the rebates and so forth there isn't the huge price difference between them
that there was when the 5D first came out.

I also wouldn't buy dedicated digital lenses, if you're serious enough about
photography to be using the Pentax system then I can almost guarantee that
one day you'll want a full frame sensor and at that point the digital lenses
will be useless. I'd buy one or two of the Canon L lenses if possible. And
if the 5D with L lenses is too big a financial bite and you have to make a
choice, then I'd buy the Rebel and an L lens or two rather than the 5D with
lesser quality lenses. Digital cameras will come and go but you'll likely be
keeping good quality glass for quite a while.

For many years I regarded even prosumer digital cameras as fun things to
play around with but nothing to be taken seriously. But since I replaced my
Nikon D100 with the 5D my attitude has changed. 4x5 is still superior but
the 5D sure does give the Pentax a run for its money. This is by way of
suggesting that you not scrimp on this camera and lenses because you think
it will just be a backup. It might turn into a lot more than that.
