Deliberately overexpose several shots by different amounts so that you can see the banding and posterization that will happen at the silhouette transition. Look separately at each color channel, and also compare raw conversion color spaces, sRGB vs. prophoto for example. Once you get a feel for it, you can judge how important exposure and bracketing might be to achieving your image intent.
