I have had a similar problem with the 1160 and VM, and wonder whether it is an issue of variation between different printers of the same model. Certainly with color you only get really good results with a custom profile made for your own machine. Before abandoning VM, experiment with printing both grayscale and color versions of your monochrome image file using different driver settings. In my case I get excellent gradation, deep blacks and a pleasing tone by printing the unmodified grayscale file with the printer driver set to color and using sRGB (relative colorimetric) as the "color space" (PS 6). If I want to I can alter the warmth/coolness by playing with the blue curve of an RGB version of the file, but in fact I much prefer the unadjusted prints. Tim << I have had a lot of problems with the curves for the 1200 - they all come out very posterized. I spent several days trying to adjust them but never was able to do it to my satisfaction. I am thinking of switching to the MIS Full Spectrum inks so that I'd have only one curve to deal with. >>
