RE: [Digital BW] Re: Paper-tone versus ink-tone

2006-11-15 by John Moody

I have 11x14 BW prints from both the Z2100 and Z3100 that I would be willing
to send you; for free of course. The Z2100 is on Mule, and the Z3100 is on
HP Satin.
As good as the Z2100 print is, the Z3100 print leaves me shaking my head.
For out of the box printing, it really looks good. I would have to see the
original file for the Z2100 print to determine if what I see as issues in
the print are due to the image file. Based on that one sample, I am not
excited about Z2100 matte performance. The image was from Neil, so I
suspect it was pretty good, leaving that my BW expectations are too high for
the Z2100 approach.
I also have a Z2100 color PK print has too much bronzing for my eye, so I
guess I’m not crazy about the Z2100. I did not bother looking at the 9180,
so I can’t offer any comparison to that.
The HP rep that gave me the prints was excellent. He knew what he was
talking about; he was a lead guy in the Gretag integration, if I understood
him correctly. Also, he was in the pleasant position of not having to
“sell” the printer, due to the excitement over the prints. After my
experience at the Epson booth, I really felt like I wanted to buy something
from HP, and I don’t even like HP that much. :-)

After seeing the Z3100 prints, you might want to wait, and see if Epson
comes out with a 13” with both blacks and glop. That would be very nice,
and likely affordable for people without high production needs.

Best regards,
John Moody

Hello C. David,

Do you know anyone who could supply small sample prints from these
printers (for a reasonable fee of course)?

Clayton
