Whether it's an understatement or not, I don't know, because I haven't
looked at the QTR code. I was just paraphrasing the license, which
says [1]:
The QuadToneRIP product has multiple pieces of code. The low
level drivers for the Epson printers are based on Gimp-Print
Open Source Project. ... The rest of code for the QuadToneRIP
product including Quad Tone Profiling, ICC profiling, installers
and user interface are all proprietary work.
I think the interesting thing here is that the GIMP/Gutenprint [2]
developers *have* delivered a "poor man's RIP" (and in fact, I
think that part of the effort pre-dates QTR).
Gutenprint is not specifically targeted at Epson printers, so I
think some very interesting things could happen if somebody were
to add better color management to Gutenprint and turn it into
more of a real RIP.
