Thats where high bit can be useful, though not perfectly useful, in supplying some values that may be better than simple interpolations, and capturing the 'dumped' values in a way that MIGHT actually utilize them later. Color balancing has no choice but to follow the same process. Counterintuitive as it may be, image editing is a downhill slope all the way, no matter how much better the results may look to the eye than the original. In fact, on way of thinking about it is that the process is one of optimizing for the perceptual nature of the eye, from the linear source. Take a look at what a 'RAW' file really looks like (in its original form) if you don't think that the trip from source to perpeptually ideal isn't a rollercoaster ride downhill! C.
