A color file that is in 8-bit rgb mode converted to BW only has 256 tones (levels) even if still in rgb mode. This is because all three of the rgb values become the same for each pixel (r = b = g in that scenario). Clayton, yes I do believe that posterization and histogram combing are diretly related to one another.
