Here is the best summary of the Jerry Olson CIS recycling procedure I've
been able to get from him.  If you go to the straight MIS FS inks, they are
close enough to Piezo that it will probably work OK.  (The FS inks are a
hair less warm and noticeably less green -- much less green if you have the
"greenies.")  If you go to the new neutral FS (may not be on the web site
yet) then you'll have more of a "pollution" problem.  Olson uses this
procedure, however, and seems to think it works well.

Jerry Olson's procedure to re-use a CIS with new inks:

Jerry has lots of experience replacing inks in the CIS system, and says that
it is not hard at all. He just draws as much ink as he can get

through the center tube in the bottle caps. He gets about 15 cc's of ink

out. Then he tips the cartridges upside down and sucks ink from the new

bottles back into the cartridges. When the tubes are full of ink, you

can easily see it, because the first operation leaves them mostly

without ink. By sucking the ink through them again, you can see all the

air is gone. It does take about 5 cleanings or so to get the ink flowing

again, and also for the first day or so you do have to run a lot of head

cleanings. (at least 6 more), and then everything is fine.

Jerry uses no special needle or other device on the syringe. He just puts
the long vacuum snout that you attach to a syringe from

the first NoMoreCarts system on a 60mm syringe. A needle might

go in too far and puncture something. There is no connection, he just

puts it in the hole about 1/4 inch, and the ink comes right down

and into the cartridges.

There is a little pollution of the new inks from the old for a while, but
since you've pulled about 15-18 ccs of ink out of the tubes and

cartridges, it doesn't take many prints to get the good ink working. It

is already filling the ink feed lines, and there is also quite a bit in

the cartridges when you do this. 15 letter size prints or so and you

should be on the new inks. Of course this would never work for changing

color to quad or vice versa.

  supply of Cone Piezo B&W inks and I am thinking about switching to
  something else in the MIS line. I am currently using a CIS from
  NoMoreCarts and I was wondering form those who have experience in doing
  this, how difficult is it or how do you go about cleaning out the Cone
  inks from the CIS when making such a switch? Is it better to just get a
  new CIS unit and start from scratch? What has been your experience?

  Also, which of the MIS products for quadtone printing comes closest to
  the Cone look, the Original, the Full Spectrum or the Variable set?
