Michael... I'll paint a picture of how I do it. It won't be for you but perhaps you can glean a thing or two: a.. There are 4 machines in my office: 1) My workstation, 2) A file server (just a pc that I use to store all files on), 3) a co-worker machine, 4) My wife's machine, These are all connected via an Ethernet LAN, all Windows XP b.. My workstation has three drives in it: C) This is where I install all programs, etc. D) This is a Photoshop scratch disk. E) A drive used for backups. c.. The File Server has several drives in it. One drive is for everything except Art and Images. Another drive is just for Art, and another drive is just for Images. None of these file saving drives are the C:/ drive. d.. I don't store any files on my own machine. All files that I work on or create are stored on the file server. e.. Files are automatically backed up from the file server each night to somewhere on a second or third drive on any of the other three machines. f.. I have external drives onto which I copy my Art and my Images (about once a month) that are kept in the safety deposit box. g.. Overkill? Perhaps. But I'm happy. And I've survived for about 5 years now without loosing an image. Hope this helps. -Jim Coffee- www.jamescoffee.com www.DigitalImagingBasics.com ----- Original Message ----- From: michael3442 To: DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2007 7:45 AM Subject: [Digital BW] OT: Computer Hard Drive & Backup Management Suggestions needed. I need to take a step up the ladder of managing my digital files, having just found myself out of hard drive space. Thinking that now would be a good time to lay down a foundation for the next few years, I'll be migrating to a new C: drive and would like to hear opinions on how to manage it. By this I mean partitioning, and how many, where to put Photoshop (Elements), location of scratch disks (yes, Elements has these), location of My Photos, location of Windows' swap file, use of a 2nd physical drive, and supplementary USB drives. And how do you keep all this under control? I realize this may be a big subject, but your assistance will be much appreciated and when it's all over will likely avoid a lot of screwing around at a later date. Thanks. -Michael K [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
