Most of my experience has been with a library of around 2700 images hosted on an external drive that I communicate with through a router so basically a maximum of 100 mb/s. Most of the delay occurs during heavy IO operations such as importing images, importing/exporting XMP sidecar information and manipulating metadata. This is the price you pay for increased speed in searching and filtering compared to having to search across folders and look up file metadata on disk. I haven't run much of the beta and jumped right in before the end of April to make use of the 1/3 off Adobe special. Did you install many beta version of Lightroom? I did import the 2700 images located across a complex hierarchy of folders without issues other then for compatibility mode disabled files. I have a fairly complex system with various software packages and less ram than you do so it does seem like you may have configuration issues. On a relatively fast (Intel DuoCore, 4GB RAM) PC it runs like a dog. It locks up frequently (ie., the UI becomes completely non-responsive, scroll bars don't move, the dreaded "Not Responding" message appears, etc.) and sometimes just terminates itself out of the blue -- POOF, it is no longer running. I also have problems importing my multiple folders of scans. This could be "pilot error" but none of the obvious methods do a complete job. I have not tried contacting Adobe support -- based on other reports this could be another exercise in futility.
