Digital BW, The Print

There are 2 basic types of sprays - solvent based and water based.  The
solvent based are rather toxic and the water based are nearly impossible to
get good results with unless you have professional equipment.

 

That said, for matte prints I often use Lascaux Fixativ, which is a
solvent-based spray sold at art stores (cheapest at Jerry's, I think).  It
has the least impact on the image.  Most other solvent-based sprays I've
used decrease the dmax too much.  Lascaux has no UV protecting quality, but
for indoor display, UV is not as serious as it is outside.   Glass and
acrylic absorb the worst UV, and museum glass eliminates the problem
entirely.

 

I've tested a lot of these sprays, and bad nozzles and yellowing are common.

 

The water-based sprays are very hard to control.  If one has a professional
spray booth, you can get great results.  They very significantly affect the
surface, potentially increasing the dmax and giving the best protection a
matte print can have short of a laminate or glass/acrylic.

 

For glossy paper I use Premier Art Print Shield (solvent).  This raises the
dmax and gives good protection (virtually water-proofs the print) easily. 

 

Use lots of ventilation, goggles, etc. for the solvent sprays.

 

I hope to totally get away from sprays.  This Premier Art Matte BW that
we've been talking about recently is among the toughest matte papers I've
seen.  One can rub a finger across a 100% black patch and not see any
significant effect.  Progress.
