Fine BW printing can be highly technical and intimidating at first,
and a technically oriented forum like this often emphasizes that side
of things.  But there are simpler approaches.  Please have a look at
article #9 at the link below.  It outlines a simple workflow for the
Epson 2400 which is one of the easiest ways to get started with very
high quality fine prints.

This printer costs about $750 these days, but is state of the art
technology and can produce very fine BW prints "out of the box".  Any
other approach has more complexity, more fiddling with equipment, and
requires more effort and time to learn.

If you can afford a 2400 it's a highly recommended approach.
