Harry, I think we also have to specify what form of carbon we are talking about. The word is often used loosely as if there is only one type. One form of pure carbon - buckyballs (fullerenes - C60 and similar) - are soluble in water and many organic solvents and vary in color - C60 is purple for example. Bob Frost.
