The easy, fail-safe way to release an Epson printer head for cleaning: Turn on the printer, and when the head is busy somewhere away from its parked position, pull out the power cord. (For example, press the button to change cartridges and then pull out the power cord.) This will not harm the printer, since it has to have been designed to recover from accidental power outages when it is working. When you're cleaning in there, be fairly gentle around little pad that goes up under the heads when they park or dump ink during startup or cleaning --- it is a fairly flimsy, plastic mechanism with a drain tube on the bottom. I managed to dislodge the drain tube one time and dislocate the pad or pivot as well (!) ...it was one inky mess to get it working again even though it is a very simple mechanism. [Short of completely dismantling these printers, I don't think there is an *easy* way to gain access to parking side of the printer mechanism.] When you're finished cleaning, plug the printer back in and it will reorganize itself to print or park properly.
