16 bit is essentially irrelevant. Nikon's 4000ppi and the defunct Minolta's 4000ppi seemed identical in my tests to Minolta's alleged 5400ppi, though the latter does make a much bigger file. Obviously, the alleged higher numbers from flatbeds and discount scanners do not suggest they are even equal to Nikon. Several "lower resolution" drum scanners reportedly do better than Nikon.
