Digital BW, The Print

It's been since August since I bought this 1160 and haven't been able to decide which inks to buy.  I was planning to order the CIS from Mediastreet but they are currently out of stock.  This printer still has the packing tape on it?  If you were starting from scratch which ink and paper combination would you start from?  (looking to cut out alot of the trial and error if that is possable)  I have the 1200 and Generations Enhanced Colour which isn't working for me (another story)  So I'd like the grey scale to at least go my way with the hopefull avoidance of Murphy's Law which loves me so dearly,

In all the camera discussion I haven't seen any mention of the fuji 6900, this is the camera I have.  Does anyone else have experience with this model and quad tone printing?

Will it matter if I run the epson colour through this printer to at least make sure it's running before I put greyscale in it?
