Digital BW, The Print

Problem:

Turn on the printer, wait while it goes through the startup process 
(paper feeds, printer carriage goes through its startup pattern, etc.). 
Then everything comes to a screeching halt and all the ink lights plus 
the paper feed light start blinking rapidly and the power light stays 
off.

I can't move the ink carriage to the refill position and all buttons 
become inoperable except the power button.

I can see no obstacles in the paper path and overall the printer seems 
to be in good order. 

Any ideas?
