The focus thing isn't just epson flatbeds. I have two scanmaker III's and one is much sharper. Or rather, one much worse. I mistakenly developed some unexposed 4x5 and used these sheets to Sharpie mark and layered them on the glass bed to see which was sharper. The FP4 was maybe too thick for this test.. I suspect that a degree of OOF is built-in to minimize dust and scratches.
