[Digital BW] Re: Another take on the "fiber/baryta" papers . . .

2008-01-30 by Chris Patti

I just finished printing my way through a box each of Gold Fibre Silk
and Harmon Gloss FB. In my opinion, both of these papers are great.
After giving up on digital BW printing for several years after much
frustration trying to make good prints with a 1280, I just got back in
after acquiring an Epson 3800. My first efforts were with various matt
papers, and I was very pleased with the results. But the prints I've
made on the Ilford and Harmon fiber papers are way better, the best
prints I've ever been able to make (or have made), digital or wet.

To my mind it's a close call on quality between the Harmon and Ilford.
I like the cooler tone and lack of gloss differential on the Harmon
(although I dont' find the GD is obtrusive on the Ilford--you have to
look for it), but I find the Harmon a bit too glossy. If all things
were equal, I'd probably go for the Harmon, but all things aren't equal
at all. The Harmon paper costs almost twice as much as the Ilford.
That tips the choice to the Ilford for me.
