Hello folks, I've been here awhile, lurking, and although I've read lots of information on B&W printing, I'm in need some direction, so I thought I would seek guidance on where to start from this experienced group of accomplished digital practitioners. By way of introduction, I'm a Newbie to B&W digital \ufffd but I'm an 'Old Hand' at B&W (wet & dark) analog photography, with many (silver) prints and exhibitions under my belt. I've been an instructor at a local college in basic to advanced photography and darkroom techniques, with some (early) years of experience in retail photography and commercial photofinishing. GOAL: To produce an artists retrospective portfolio of digital prints on 8x11 paper via desktop publishing software/hardware. What I'm doing to achieve my goal is to begin my digital imaging learning curve by joining this list and joining PMA/DIMM to attend PMA trade show later this month. Gotta see them goodies... <grin> Tools on hand: Mac G3/450, 907M RAM, 200+G storage, OS 8.6 (System tweaked for digital audio). Both LCD and CRT monitors. HP 970 printer (business) Existing Format: 70% 120, 30% 35 mm on tri/plus-x, T-max 400/100 developed in HC 110, Rodonol, T-max. Tools needed: Scanner, printer, software... QUESTIONS: 1.) What scanner to achieve reasonably high print quality on A3 printer? I use borders, so final image will be approximately 5"x to 8" max, cropped on 8x11 paper. I'm looking at the new Epson 2450 flatbed as a cost effective tool. 2.) Which printer, but more importantly, which print *system* can be used with Mac OS? I wish to avoid Windows emulation. 3.) I have (ancient) Photoshop v2.5, purchased used, which may not be eligible for upgrade, so I presume I'll need to upgrade or purchase new software. Which software? Suggestions appreciated!
