Pretty good video tutorial on this topic; thanks for the link.

Investigation of this command awhile back led me to writing a PS 
action to build individual layers based on each channel. This 
approach enables one to combine the channel-based layers via opacity 
and/or blend mode settings plus has the advantage of leveraging layer 
masks, clipping groups, etc. It's a lot easier/faster to make 
adjustments/tweaks to the individual layers than navigate the 
Calculations dialog each time to alter the outcome.
