I am not qualified to answer many of your questions but I can help with 2 of them - 1. see www.scantips.com for everything you need to know about scanners and scanning. Wayne Fulton the author also has a book version if you're like me and prefeer learning off paper rather than the screen. He is very helpful. 2. The Epson's are "the standard" - 1160, 1280 etc 3.
