Paper to use in a an emergency

2008-02-23 by Salongo Lee

Hello,

I thought I'd pass this along. At 2AM this morning a local artist I work with needed some 9x12 prints from a 18x24 pencil sketch by 9AM and of course had no budget. They wanted something on a smooth water color paper and it had to be acid free. I live in Natchez, MS and everything associated with art and photographic supplies has to be ordered over the Internet and shipped in. (a Office Depot is opening next week, can't wait)

I had some Canson 9x12 Bristol 100# water color pads for pencil, ink and dry media, which feels and looks like a heavy version of EEM. After shooting the pencil drawing in Raw and doing a little clean up in CS2, I printed on the water color paper using QTR with the EEM-Cool curve . When laid next to a one printed on EEM you could not tell the difference, except for the paper color. The ink dries and does not rub off or flak off. The Epson is white and the Canson has a slight warm off white.

My set up is a Mac iBook 500mhz Dual USB/576mb ram, Panther 10.3.9 and CS2 printing on Epson 2200QTR anb BO printing for my b&w work with the Epson Inks and I use a chip resetter, which has worked well fro me the last 3 years. I use a R2400 with epson inks for all my color work and I'm waiting on a chip resetter for that printer.

I'm not into the science and technology of papers. I try a paper and if I like the look and fell I'm good to go. Most of my work is printed on Epson Velvet Fine Art , Epson Ultra Premium Presentation (EEM) and Hahanemule Photo Rag 308. Most of my sales are for the Art festival market and to several galleries that carry my work. I like to experiment with an image so I'm always on the look out for a deal on a 8.5x11/9x12 paper to play with on till I like the final image. This paper is about $4.72 a 15 sheet pack at WalMart, which is about 32¢ a sheet and you can print on both sides. It feeds with no problem through the sheet feed top. As far as longevity I have no idea but it is a acid free uncoated water color paper. With a coating of UV spray it should last longer than a old style RC color print.

In a pinch it can be used for some inexpensive art prints.

 Peace,
Sálongo Lee
