Nikon Coolscan scanners (I have a V) are very good with fine-grained film, but not so good with grainy film. My Canon 9950F flatbed is better with grainy negatives. Then there are the high-end flatbeds (Screen Cezanne, Kodak/Creo IQSmart, Kodak/Creo Eversmart...) and drum scanners, but both of these options are much more expensive. I have a Cezanne, but it's not for everyone. It makes great scans, though. -Peter
