RIP stands for Rastor Image Porcessor (I believe)

The major advantage to using a RIP among others are;
1. Layout flexibility - You can place and arrange numerous images on one sheet of paper.
2. Ink Channel Adjustability - You can control each ink independently.
3. Dither - Most RIPs use proprietary dither pattern to eliminate dots and banding as well as some artifacts.
4. Proofing - Rips will usually have a "Soft Proof" function so what you see is what you get.

ImagePrint 4 allows b/w profiles.  You would need profiling software and a photospectrometer of some sort.
I know many people who make profiles at home. The better equipment to do so is expensive, but make more accurate profiles.
