Don't be daunted with monitor calibration - although I would recommend a hardware calibration tool like the X-Rite Display 2 or Spyder 3. Best not buy the cheapest as they are less flexible in available settings.

Until you buy a calibrator you could try this: http://quickgamma.de/indexen.html - I haven't tried it, but it could be a stop-gap.
